A while ago I was contacted by a furniture manufacturing company who requested a design proposal for functional objects that would seamlessly augment their new direction in contemporary pieces. I visited the production facility to better understand the company, it’s process and the call out.

I was confronted by endless inspiration beginning with the lines and shapes of the templates, the joinery, construction methods, materials, textures, repeat patterns…

Back in my studio loose concepts, ideas and studies for new products began by cutting, pasting and printing layered shapes and patterns garnered from those I recorded from the prototypes and design templates in the production factory. Every shape in this series is sourced from those I saw and photographed in factory or from a certain piece of furniture’s design.

I often begin new works in this way, whether the result is a jewellery collection, a series of paintings or a single object. Its like very active sketching. The result is a number of large pieces expressing the unfolding story behind the project . I hang them on the wall and refer to them for direction.

Kind of like a map. Or blueprint.
